NZARA, South Sudan, 26 November 2015 – One thousand girls and boys have access to new classrooms today, thanks to the Government of Japan and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Tetsuko Kuroyanagi, who raised funds for construction after a visit in 2013.
Zereda Nursery and Primary School is now teaching girls and boys from the local area and the wider region. UNICEF, in partnership with the State Ministry of Education and with support from other donors, has built eight new classrooms and mobilized and trained 13 new teachers. Everything from books to blackboards and furniture to pens has been provided. The sanitation facilities and water points were generously funded by the Government of Japan.
“Every child in South Sudan has the right to an education. And the authorities in Western Equatoria State have led the way in asserting that education is for all, especially girls, and the demand for education in the state is at an all-time high. UNICEF and its partners will continue to build on this fantastic work and help get more children into the classroom,” said Ettie Higgins, UNICEF South Sudan Deputy Representative, speaking at the event. Higgins spoke in the presence of the Governor, the Ambassador of Japan, the Minister for Education, local Government, NGOs, school children and communities in attendance.
